Wounded Knee / Buffalo Bill's Wild West Shows
The news of the "hostiles" and Ghost Dancers did reach Carlisle via some informants who had returned to Pine Ridge, among them, George Means. True to this week's episode of INTO THE WEST, the flames were fueled by newspaper accounts looking to sensationalize events in Indian Country.
Also of interest will be the subtle reference to Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The traveling shows provided viable means of support for returned students who couldn't otherwise find work. There are some references to these shows in the school newspapers. Here's a sampling.
I apologize to my weekly INDIAN HELPER subscribers for not getting a transcription out in so many weeks. I really have no good excuse.
